Knights Lose to Regional Power, Wilkes

ASTON, Pa. – In a battle of two teams who competed in NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament last year, the Neumann College men's tennis was defeated by Wilkes University, 8-1, Saturday afternoon.  The Knights ran into one of the top Division III teams in the region and were not able to overcome the strength of Wilkes tennis team.

 

The Knights gave up all three doubles points to the Colonels. The first doubles duo of David Pfister and Brian Crispin took a 6-5 lead but could not close out the match and lost to Chris Cozzillio and Kyle Ungvarsky 8-6.  Jeremy Nolt and Kyle Ungvarsky defeated Dan Harnos and Chris Brown, 8-3.  Steve Klenk and Greg Brigdeman lost at third doubles 8-1.

 

Pfister took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first set to win it, 6-4. Jeremy Nolt muscled back to win the second and third set in a super breaker 4-6, 6-3, (10-12). The Knights gained their lone point at second singles as Brown defeated Evan Katz with his baseline winners and volleying skills, 6-4, 6-4. Wes McCollum defeated Brian Crispin 6-1, 6-1 at third singles. Chris Cozzillio defeated Greg Bridgeman, but not without putting up a fight in the second set. Bridgeman adjusted and reanalyzed his game, but lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) tie breaker.  Dan Harnos lost to Kyle Ungvarsky 6-0, 6-1 and Steve Klenk lost to Jon Rohrbach 6-1, 6-1.

 

Head Coach Gosseaux stated, “All though I was disappointed by the overall score of the match, we have tremendous respect for the Wilkes team and we understand they are a top notch opponent.  This type of competition will only help us as begin to enter league play.”

 

The Knights will be back on the courts Tuesday March 17th to compete against league rival Cabrini College. The match is slated to start at 3:30pm. The Knights are now 3-1 overall.
