Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

POMONA, N.J. – The Neumann University women's basketball team opened its 2010-11 season with an 83-63 loss at Richard Stockton College Monday evening in non-conference action.

 

Katie Young led the Knights with a double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds. Krista DiRomualdo added 16 points and Sami Borcky added 12 boards. The team made seven three-pointers.

 

Five Ospreys scored double-digits, led by LaTonya Oliver with 21. Che'Na Thompson added 18 points, Aspen Price-Perry netted 14 and Lauren Alwan and Julia Fagan each notched 10. Fagan also pulled down 15 rebounds. Oliver added 13 and Alwan notched 10.

 

Stockton started strong early and built a 14-4 lead seven minutes into the game. The Ospreys built their lead up to 19, 44-25, with 2:48 left in the first half. Neumann climbed back to with 12, 44-32, heading into halftime, capped by a three-pointer by DiRomulado with five second on the clock.

 

The Knights opened the second half on an 11- 5 run to cut the Ospreys lead to six, 49-43, with 15:35 on the clock. Over a two-and-a-half minute span, Stockton went on a 7-0 run to build its lead back to 13, 56-43. Neumann could not get back within single digits and fell 83-63.

 

Neumann (0-1) will travel to King's (Pa.) College on Thursday evening for non-conference action. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
