Men's Basketball Hangs On Against Rowan

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Rowan University 84-79 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Four Knights scored in double-figures, led by Marquise Boggs with 18. Patrick O'Connor netted 17 points and went 8-for-8 from the line. Mike Walukiewicz hit three from beyond the arc in his 13 points while Bill Slade also hit three from downtown en route to his 12 points.

Akeem Johnson and Roger Loatman led the Profs with 14 points each. Sean Hughes netted 12 while Kendall White added 11. Rich McNamara pulled in 10 rebounds.

The Knights jumped out to a double-digit lead, 31-17, midway through the first half when they went on an 11-2 run. Neumann kept the pressure on and went into halftime leading 43-30.

In the second half, Neumann built its lead up to 21, 60-39, with 13:21 left on the clock. However, Rowan would not go quietly and started chipping away.  With 6:42 remaining in the second half, the Profs had cut the Knight's lead to nine, 66-57.

Rowan continued to press and with 2:28 left, the Profs had cur the Knights lead to four, 75-71. Two free-throws by O'Connor and a dunk by Mark Blount put Neumann back up by nine with 40 seconds left.  The Profs rattled off six points for an 82-79 Neumann lead with five seconds remaining. Walukiewicz then sank two free throws to secure the win.

Neumann (1-2) opens conference play on Monday when it hosts Immaculata. The women will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
