ASTON, Pa. – Neumann University men's lacrosse comes up short against Immaculata University, falling 11-9 in Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Matt Toth set the pace for Neumann's offense with four goals. Justin Mailloux scored three goals and notched one assist. Steve Lis and Justin Smith each recorded a tally. Andrew Neubauer made 16 saves on the afternoon.
The Mighty Macs were led by John Cacchio with four goals and an assist. Ben Tuscai notched five assists. Andrew Sim made 18 saves to pick up the win.
The conference match-up was strongly played by both teams, with both teams playing strong defense and the goalies coming up with big saves. Defense dominated the first half of the game, with players bodying up the attackers as they drove the net and forcing them to take an off angle shots.
Neither team found the back of the net until Toth scored for the Knights with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Immaculata's Cacchio quickly tied the game at one with a minute and a half remaining in the first.
The Mighty Macs took their first led four minutes into the second period on a man up opportunity. Toth responded with another goal to tie up the game for the second time. The teams traded goals for the next five minutes of play with Immaculata taking a 4-3 lead into half time.
The Mighty Macs scored first in the second half to take a two goal advantage. For the next twelve minutes of play the teams traded goals, with the Knights tying the game twice, once at 6-6 and a Smith goal with nine minutes remaining in regulation tying the game at eight each.
Immaculata would score three goals in the final eight minutes of play, two coming on the extra man opportunities to secure the win. Neumann would net one more goal before time expired for the 11-9 final.
Before today's contest we took a few minutes to honor the 12 seniors on the team. The seniors have helped the program grow over the last four seasons. We thank them for their dedication to the program.
The Knights (2-10, 1-4 CSAC) are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Shenandoah for their final conference game. Start time is set for 4p.m.
