BALTIMORE, Md. - The Neumann University Knights played a hard fought conference match tonight beating the College of Notre Dame in four sets (13-25; 25-18; 25-17; 25-16).
Notre Dame came out aggressive in the first game, taking an early lead on the Neumann Knights. The Knights never recovered and struggled to play their game. However, the Knights turned it around in the second game led by freshman Katelin Kuklentz. The freshman outside hitter swung big and registered five kills in game two. Mariah Ripken anchored the serve receive with strong passing putting the ball into setter Cecily Scavicchio's hands. Scavicchio had 12 assists in game 2 and set a varied offense allowing her hitters to all contribute offensively. For the night, Scavicchio had 41 assists and 9 digs. Scavicchio is currently averaging over 9 assists per set.
Once the Knights gained momentum behind senior Lauren Sheehan, they pulled together as a team and played passionate in games three and four. Natalie George led the way in game three with five kills on six attempts.
Notre Dame's hitters were aggressive, but Limmina and Ripken combined for a total of 23 digs stopping the strong hitting duo of Catherine Subrizi and Margie Maresca. Kuklentz also shared in the defensive victory with 12 digs of her own. The Knights went after Notre Dame offensively and in game four put away 15 kills against the Gators, making only two errors.
On the night, three of the Knights hit over a .400- Helen Trimble, Natalie George and Lauren Sheehan. The three hitters had a total of 23 kills for the match. Katelin Kuklentz added 15 kills while Gianna Jones contributed eight kills. As a team, the Neumann Knights hit over a .300 in games two, three and four showing that they were ready to fight for their third CSAC win. Tonight's win is the fourth straight win for the Knights and also puts them 3-1 in CSAC action.
With the win, the Neumann Knights now set their sights on another tough opponent in Centenary College. They will travel to Hackettstown, NJ on Monday night for another conference match up.
