Box Score

ASTON, Pa. -  The Neumann University field hockey team lost in a stroke off, 3-2, to Widener University Thursday night. The score ended in a 2-2 draw through regulation and overtime periods.

On a night that featured  wide open play by both teams, it was Widener that struck first in the eighth minute of play to take the early advantage on a goal by Devon Biglin. The Knights responded quickly and found Kelsey McCrossin streaking down the right side of the field only to find Melissa Hood sniffing in front of the goal mouth and scored off the cross

Neumann would open its goal scoring account , again, as Callie Emel fired a shot past Maggie Karmeris in the 30th minute giving the Knights the lead just before halftime

As both teams regrouped during the intermission, Widener came out quick and fast putting Neumann on their heels. Neumann weathered the initial storm with solid saves by Maggie Carpenter who was tremendous in goal.

Widener would even up the score in the 48th minute with a goal from Emily Norcross. From that point forward, the game was open play, creating opportunities both ways. Both team's stamina was tested as 100 minutes couldn't prove either team victorious.

It was Callie Emel and Chelsa O'Donnell that tallied in the stroke off. Maggie Capenter was fantastic in the net, saving three strokes. Additional strokes were necessary and Kate Fay from Widener provided the game winner.

“Although it's difficult to come away from this one with the loss, we saw some great work on the field in this marathon contest,” said Coach Sarah Kurpel.

"Freshman Carolyn Bacho and Senior Jennie Greenlee were getting some great touches out on the wing. Our defensive unit proved to be a major force as they did not allow Widener to score on a single one of their 30 penalty corners. We're really looking forward to the weekend tournament to get back on the field."

The field hockey team will play on the road in the Wilson Classic, where they will play Shenandoah University at 2 p.m.
