Women's Ice Hockey Tame The Mustangs

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened with a 4-1 win in the first of two game series against non-conference Stevenson University Sunday afternoon.

Lynsey Nakamura steered the Knights to victory with two goals and one assist.

The Knights took advantage of a power play 13:33 into the first period. Edie Brenning blasted a shot past the Stevenson goaltender. Dru Austin and Nakamura assisted on the Brenning's goal.

The Mustangs showed great resolve as they scored just 2:00 into the second period. Stevenson drew back a goal off a breakaway to tie the score 1-1.

The pesky and spirited Knights took a 2-1 lead in the second period as Nakamura scored halfway into the second period.

The Knights scored two insurance goals in the third period to secure the win. Ang Gilmour scored at the 14:09 mark and Nakamura scored at the 19:12 mark. Brenning and Kelsey Waller assisted on the third goal.

Amanda Simpson was another positive influence on the game with two shots, as the Mustangs will have to make a mental note on Simpson's contribution for tomorrow's game.

Justina Mayr was terrific in the contest as she made 32 saves in the game and only conceding one goal.

The Knights outshot the Mustangs 37-32.

“I think the layoff provided the slow start for us, but I really believe we were stronger as the game progressed,” mentioned Coach Handrahan.

The Knights (3-8-1, 2-4 ECAC West) will compete against Stevenson on the road New Year's Eve, Monday December 31 at 12 p.m.
