REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey finish the year 2012 with a shutout 3-0 win against non-conference opponents Stevenson University, Monday afternoon.

The Knights complete a two game sweep against the Mustangs, as their New Year's resolution started early. Neumann was led by Amanda Simpson, Dru Austin and Ang Gilmour scored a goal each and Justina Mayr recorded the shutout.

Neumann dominated play and created havoc in the first period with a 9-4 shots advantage. The nine shots on target for the Knights were clear cut opportunities, in which the Mustangs goaltender was simply superb.

The Knights showed discipline not being penalized in the first period, contrary to Stevenson providing power play opportunities for Neumann. The Mustangs Goaltender, Mackenzie Bruch was flawless until Simpson scored 17:11 into the first period. The power play goal was assisted by Lauren Cusack and Megan Russelo.

The second period was scoreless and the Knights held a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs had a 16-7 shots on goal advantage, which was due in part to the Knights gratuitous four penalties in the second period.

The Knights battled to maintain the shutout in the third period. The first test came when the Mustangs drew a power play and the Knights responded with a short-handed goal from Austin at the 9:42 mark. The next challenge was when the Mustangs went to a six attacker. Gilmour defended with Neumann pride, collected the puck and guided the puck into the back of the empty net at the 19:42 mark.

Mayr was brilliant starting her second consecutive game, as she made 24 saves on the day.

The Knights (4-8-1, 2-4 ECAC West) start the New Year hosting Salve Regina University Tuesday, January 8 at 4 p.m.
