Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team battled in defeat at the hands of Colonial States Athletic Conference Gwynedd-Mercy College 89-77 Saturday afternoon.
The Knights 8-9 needed the win to capture sole possession of fourth place in the CSAC. The fourth place spot is up for grabs with two others teams (Rosemont and Centenary). Gwynedd-Mercy 11-6 sealed the third place slot and guaranteed them a CSAC playoff quarter final home game.
The Griffins would use their home court advantage by building a 9-2 lead.
Gerald Bryant would give the necessary response needed to get the Knights back on track. Bryant would hit two consecutive baskets hitting a jumper first and then drained a three pointer to close the game score 9-7.
The game would be tied at 12-12 for the first time in the first half. The Griffins would extend the lead to 21-16.
Mark Blount's dunk tied the score at 31-31 to claw the Knights back in to the game. The Griffins rattled off six points and gain a six point lead 37-31.
Mike Walukiewicz scored a three pointer with 12 seconds remaining in the half, as the Griffins lead 37-34 at halftime.
The Knights would exchange baskets much of the first 10 minutes. The Griffins would gain a one point advantage 60-59 with 9:27 remaining in the game. The Griffins one point lead would be lengthened to a nine point lead over the next 1:52 with a 70-61 lead. The final 7:32 belonged to the Griffins, as they extended their lead to as many as 13 points.
The Knights were lead by
Terrance Clark with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Mike Walukiewicz chipped in 12 points and
Mark Blount added 10 points. The Knights found it difficult to contain the Griffins Dan DelConte, as he scored 27 points.
The Knights will host Marywood University on “Senior Night” Feb. 15, 7 p.m. tipoff for their final regular season game.
