Gardner's OT Goal Sends Knights Over Soaring Eagles

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals, including the game-winner in overtime by Marlon Gardner, to defeated No. 9 Elmira College 5-4 in an ECAC West semifinal contest on Saturday night.

 

Gardner scored the game-winner 1:41 into the overtime session. Cory Park assisted on the goal.

 

Elmira, the No. 1 seed in the ECAC West, took an early 2-0 lead, scoring the first goal just 2:57 into the first period. .Bill Foster cut the lead to 2-1 with 3:36 left in the period. Matt Mazzarolo and Andrew Love drew the assists.

 

The Soaring Eagles netted the only two goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.

 

The Knights scored three goals in the third period to start the comeback. Jordan Zalba scored just 19 seconds into the third period. Gardner assisted on the power play tally. Ryan Dreger the scored at the 6:49 mark off assists from Dan McDougall and Mazzarolo. Harley Garrioch tied the game at four 9:07 into the period. Chris Bournazos and Dreger assisted on the game-tying goal.

 

Ross MacKinnon made seven saves in net through one-plus period. Matt Tendler picked up the win and made 10 saves.

 

Neumann, the No. 5 seed, (15-7-3) will travel to No. 3 seeded Hobart College next Saturday for the ECAC West Championship game. Hobart defeated Manhatanville 6-2 in the other semifinal.
