ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Neumann University volleyball team went 2-0 at day two of the Buttermaker Classic, hosted by Muhlenberg College, on Saturday.
Gianna Jones, Julia Malseed and Sarah Sanderson all led the Knights in a 3-0 win over Centenary with seven kills apiece. Cecily Scavicchio dished out 21 assists, seven digs and five service aces.
In the second match of the afternoon, Natalie George had 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage. Katelin Kuklentz added 10 kills with a .250 hitting percentage. Kuklentz also had 13 digs.
Scavicchio handed out 19 assists and 11 digs while Ashley Clark added 17 assists. Victoria Limmina notched 12 digs.
Limmina was named to the All-Tournament team.
“Elaina Shooster was incredible on defense this weekend and her passing was strong. She stood out big time,” said head coach Deana Jesperson.” Also, Danielle Kwapisz serve was tough and aggressive. Freshmen Julia Malseed and Sarah Sanderson played consistent and solid right when needed them the most.”
Junior Gianna Jones said, "We are one step better than last year and we have some amazing freshmen. The reflection we had in Virginia made us so close so early in the season."
Senior Cecily Scavicchio said "We have been able to adjust well and counter to the different levels of play we've been up against. We have a great opportunity to share what we as upperclassman have built to our many underclassmen being that any player regardless of year can be put on the court at any time and fit right into the "family". Our chemistry on and off the court is what makes us so successful!"
Junior Caitlin Cantwell thought, “I think we are in great shape for conference play, and the out of conference matches have done nothing but strengthen our team as a whole. Our goal is to stay focused on the point, match, and team at hand; and not looking ahead. BUT, looking ahead, I'm really excited for what is to come! Success is a journey; not a destination."
Neumann will host the Knights Invitational starting next Friday. Neumann will face Marywood in a conference match to begin the Invitational at 2:30 PM.
