Men's Hockey Hands No. 1 Norwich First Loss of Season

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team won the Northfield Bank Tournament Championship by handing No. 1 Norwich University its first loss of the 2012-13 season by a 5-3 score on Saturday evening.

 

Chris Bournazos scored two goals, including the game-winner, and was named the MVP of the tournament. Braely Torris made 34 saves in net and was named to the All-Tournament team. Scott Farrell was also named to the All-Tournament team.

 

Norwich opened the scoring early, netting a goal 1:11 into the game. The Cadets put another goal on the board and took a 2-0 lead after one period.

 

Bournazos netted his first goal of the game 8:17 into the second period to cut the Norwich lead to 2-1. Craig Cowie assisted. D'Lane Sather tied the game at two with 1:21 left in the second period off an assist from Farrell, and teams went into the second intermission knotted one the scoreboard.

 

The Cadets took back the lead 2:03 into the third period. The Knights would again tie the game on a Steve Gervais goal four minutes later. Brandon Gagne assisted. Bournazos scored his second goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, mid-way through the third for a 4-3 Knights lead. Jon Low and Andrew Love drew the assists.

 

Jordan Zalba scored an insurance goal with time winding down. Jake Kratz picked up the puck behind the Cadets net and passed it to Zalba in the slot. Zalba put the one-timer in the back of the net for a 5-3 lead.

 

Dominick Dawes picks up his first win against his alma mater as a Head Coach.

 

Neumann (7-4-2) hosts SUNY-Fredonia next weekend. The opening face-off is slated for 7:00 PM on Friday and 3:00 PM on Saturday.
