ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's hockey team fell to Elmira College 7-3 on Saturday evening in ECAC West action.
While the first period looked like it was going to remain quiet, the teams combined for three goals in 27 seconds. Ryan Luiten lit the lamp for the Knights with a power play goal at the 18:29 mark. Casey Rogers and Jory Mullin tallied the assists. Eleven seconds later, the Soaring Eagles responded with goal to tie the game at one. Just 15 seconds after that, in what looked to be deja-vu, Elmira scored again to take a 2-1 lead.
The second period turned busy as well. Elmira made the score 3-1 5:42 into the period. Jon Low cut the lead to 3-2 on the man advantage. The Soaring Eagles added two more goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
Elmira added another power play goal early in the third period. CJ Cruz scored his first collegiate goal, unassisted, at the 3:46 mark of the third for a 6-3 game. The Knights pulled the goalie in attempt for a comeback and had a man advantage, but could not get the puck into the net. The Soaring Eagles sealed the win with a shorthanded, empty net goal with 37 seconds left.
Ben Curley started the game and made 16 saves in two periods. Braely Torris played the third period and made five saves.
Neumann (7-8-3, 2-5-1 ECAC West) heads on the road for three conference games, beginning at Manhattanville next Friday. Action gets underway at 7:00 PM.
