Volleyball Splits at Tri-Match to Finish Regular Season

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University volleyball team split play at the Dig Pink tri-match Saturday afternoon with Richard Stockton College and DeSales University.

The first match of the morning, between the Knights and the Ospreys, went five sets. Neumann was able to pull the five-set upset over Stockton. The Ospreys won the first set 25-14. The second set went into extra points and the Knights came away with the 32-30 win before also taking the third set 25-22. Extra points were needed again in the fourth set, and Stockton forced a fifth set with a 29-27 win. The Knights were able to win 15-9 in the fifth set to take the match 3-2.

Anna Waltz led the Knights with 20 kills. Amanda McAleer added 15 kills. Kat Wolf handed out 42 assists, to put her over 2,000 career assists. Julia Malseed tallied 30 digs as she reached 1,000 career digs in the match. Elaina Shooster added 18 digs while Waltz had 12 and Wolf and Danielle Kwapisz each added 10. Kelsey D'Imperio jumped for five block solos.

The second set was a thrilling one throughout. Each team had their own set of big runs as no team could take control of the set. The Knights held the lead at 24-21 but three quick points by the Ospreys and it was tied up. As a team needs to win by two points, the teams continued to play. With the score knotted at 30, McAleer gave the Knights the set win and pull the match even at one.

Every set was a battle for each point. In the fifth and final set, Neumann jumped out to a 7-1 lead and had an 8-2 advantage as the teams switched sides. As the Knights were on the brink of the win, with a 14-5 lead, the Ospreyd would attempt a comeback and scored four straight points. However, Neumann had a good enough cushion and it come away with the 15-9 clinching win.

In the Knights second match of the day, Neumann fell to DeSales 3-1. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-19. The Knights took the second set 25-22. DeSales then took the third and fourth sets, both by just two points, 26-24 and 25-23.

Waltz once again led the offense with 17 kills. D'Imperio had 14 and McAleer added 12. Wolf handed out 47 assists. Waltz and Malseed each notched 20 digs. Kwapisz added 17, Shooster had 14 and Wolf 11.

First set saw four combined runs from both teams of three consecutive points which kept the game close. The Knights tough mentality fought back in the second set. Neumann exploded out of the start, taking a 10-1 lead, but could not hold the lead as DeSales came back to tie it up 17-17. Neumann then went on a run to take the lead 22-18, and eventually 24-20 and in the end won the set 25-22.

Sets three and four were both extremely close, but the Bulldogs were able to get the key points at the end came away with the 3-1 win.

Neumann ends the regular season 21-11 overall and will be the No. 2 seed in the conference playoffs. The Knights will host a semifinal match on Thursday. The opponent will be determined after the first round games on Tuesday.
