ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's lacrosse team defeated Widener University 16-12 on a rainy Wednesday evening.
Koula Gregor and Lex McIntyre each had three goals to lead the Knights. Gabbey Murray had a goal and two assists. Jordan Hopkins, Rebecca Dolenti, Taylor Klever and Mandy Fedak all netted two goals. Christina Hughes made 11 saves in net and picked up eight ground balls.
Seven of Neumann's goals came on free position changes. McIntyre was 3-for-3 on her shots.
Widener came out strong in the first 10 minutes and scored the first three goals of the game as the rain started to fall. Over the next 10 minutes, the Knights scored four of the five goals to knot the game at four. Two of the goals were by McIntyre.
The teams traded the next few goals for a 6-6 game with 2:12 left in the first half. Hopkins and McIntyre scored in the final two minutes for an 8-6 Knights advantage at the half.
The Pride scored the first two goals of the second half for another tie game. Klever, Hopkins and Gregor scored in a row for the Knights for an 11-8 advantage midway through the half.
In a two-and-a-half minute span, Neumann started to pull away and netted four goals to take a 15-10 lead with 9:07 left in regulation. Klever netted an insurance goal, even as the Pride continued to put the pressure on, and the Knights came away with the 16-12 win.
Neumann (2-1) hits the road this weekend and travels to Eastern for non-conference action on Saturday. The game gets underway at 1:00 PM.
