Field Hockey Falls 4-3 in Shootout in Regular Season Finale

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team fell 4-3 in a shootout against Cabrini College on a rain and wind filled Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game on Wednesday evening.

The final game of the regular season was anything but a normal game. As the game began, the rain started to fall and the wind began to pick up. Seventy minutes of downpours would not be enough to decide a winner. After 100 minutes, the teams would go to a shootout where the Cavaliers would take the shootout 3-1 and then the game 4-3.

Becky Guinto started the scoring for the Knights in the eighth minute. Jessica Harrell knocked the ball into the circle. The Cavaliers goalie blocked the ball right to Guinto who put it in the back of the cage. Cabrini tied the game in 12th minute and teams went into halftime knotted at one.

Cabrini would score goals in the 42nd and 47th minutes to take a 3-1 lead midway through the second half. Megan Shumate cut the Cavaliers lead to one in the 54th minute. Chelsea Kulesza swept the ball over to Shumate, who was able to score. As time was winding down in regulation, Kulesza tied the game at three in the 66th minute. The freshman shot the ball and was able to get her own rebound during a scum in front of the net.

With no time left on the clock, the Cavaliers were wrapping up regulation with a penalty corner. While completing the corner, Cabrini was awarded a penalty stroke. Becca Wallace made a big save, one of many on the night, on the stroke to send the game into overtime.

Both teams had their chance during the overtime periods, but neither could capitalize. Each team was awarded five penalty corners in the extra time and Cabrini outshot Neumann 8-5. During the middle of the second overtime, the Knights had four straight penalty corners which resulted in two shots.

After the time had run off the clock, the teams went to a shootout. Cabrini won the shootout 3-1.

Wallace made 25 outstanding saves in 100 minutes in net to give the Knights a chance to take the game to a shootout. Guinto had two defensive saves. Madison Brown and Shae Risley each tallied a defensive save.

Neumann wraps up the regular season 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the CSAC. The Knights will now wait until the ECAC bids are announced to see if their season will continue.
