ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with a 79-68 win over Wilkes University on Friday evening in the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament.
The Knights were led by
JoHanna Metzger with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
Emily Lyons had 14 points, including four three-pointers, and
Sarah Roberts added 11.
The new season brought some new rules to the game. The women now play four 10-minute quarters. Wilkes got off to a quick start and took an early 7-0 lead. The Colonels held a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, the Colonels held a 35-24 lead before the Knights started to make their move. Starting with a Lyons three-pointer, Neumann finished the first half on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 39-36, at the break.
Neumann would get to within a points few times during the third quarter and eventually tie the game at 52 with 1:25 left on the clock. Wilkes would answer with the next four points and would take two-point lead, 56-64, into the final quarter.
The Knights tied the game at 56 a minute into the final quarter as they went on to score the first 14 points. A lay-up by
Ericka Smith-Sowell gave Neumann its first lead with 7:32 left in regulation during the run. Wilkes broke Neumann's streak with a free throw and the teams traded baskets over the final three minutes. The Knights were able to come away with the 79-68 win to open the season.
Neumann (1-0) will face Albright in the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament Championship game on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:00 PM.
