Women's Basketball Edges King's in Back and Forth Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated King's College (Pa.) 69-64 on Wednesday afternoon in day two of the Jamie Lynn Roberts - Fairfield Inn Holiday Classic at Catholic University.

Lauren Legler led the Knights with 22 points. JoHanna Metzger notched another double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Nafisa Saunders added 12 points.

Legler and Metzger were named to the All-Tournament team.

The game was a back and forth battle from beginning to end. The Lady Monarchs were able to score the last four points of the first quarter for a 13-9 lead after 10 minutes.

The Knights opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run to take the biggest lead of the game, 21-13. King's scored seven of the last nine points before halftime. Neumann held a 23-19 advantage at the break.

The teams traded three's to start the second half and each team scored 21 points in the quarter. The Knights took the four point lead into the final 10 minutes.

The game came down to the final 1:55 when the teams had a tied score, 59-59, for the 11th time in the game. Saunders went 2-for-2 from the line to take back the lead. After the Lady Monarchs hit 1-of-2, Saunders connected on two layups for a 65-60 Knights lead. Legler went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch for a 69-61 lead with nine seconds remaining. King's hit a three with three seconds remaining, but Neumann's lead was enough for the 69-64 win.

Neumann (4-7) now heads into the bulk of conference action, beginning at Gwynedd Mercy on January 5 at 6:00 PM.
