GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team was edged by Gwynedd Mercy University 77-76 on Tuesday evening in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
Nafisa Saunders and
JoHanna Metzger each netted 24 points for the Knights. Saunders went a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line.
The Griffins opened the game with an 11-3 run and held a 23-8 lead after the first quarter.
The Knights would outscore the Griffins in the next three quarters. In the second quarter, Neumann finished the final 2:23 with a 10-1 run to take a 41-21 deficit and get to within 42-31 at halftime.
Neumann continued to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter and got to within six, 56-50, with 1:57 on the clock. The teams traded points in the final two minutes and Gwynedd Mercy would take a 58-52 lead into the final 10 minutes.
With 2:11 left in regulation, the Griffins built up a 10 points advantage, 75-65. The Knights scored eight of the next nine points for a 76-73 score with 37 seconds remaining. Gwynedd Mercy went 1-for-2 from the free throw line with seven seconds on the clock for a four point lead. The one free throw ended up being the difference in the game as Saunders hit a three-pointer with one second remaining. The comeback attempt fell one point short, 77-76.
Neumann (4-8, 2-1 CSAC) will travel to Notre Dame of Maryland University on Thursday evening for more CSAC action. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 PM.
