RYE, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team fell at Manhattanville College 5-4 in overtime in déjà vu fashion in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West action on Friday evening.
Shayne Morrissey tallied a hat trick for the Knights, his second of the season. Mike Davis and Jory Mullin each handed out two assists.
Ryan Luiten put the Knights on the board just two minutes into the game off assists from Brandon Gagne and Jake Davidson. Morrissey scored his first goal midway through the first period for a 2-0 Neumann lead. Davis and Mullin had the assists. Manhattanville cut Neumann's lead in half before intermission for a 2-1 game.
The Valiants scored the first to goals of the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Morrissey scored a power play goal with 40 seconds left in the second to tie the game at three. Steve Low and Davis notched the assists. The teams went into the second intermission with a knotted score.
Morrissey completed his hat trick at the 13:58 mark of the third period. Mullin and Casey Rogers had the assists.
Then the déjà vu kicked in. Manhattanville pulled its goalie in its attempt to tie the game and with 58 seconds left in regulation, the Valiants put the puck in the back of the net and the game went into overtime tied at four.
With 1:01 left in the extra time, the Valiants once again was able to light the lamp and steal the game from the Knights, 5-4.
The shots were close, as Manhattanville edged Neumann 32-29. Matt Gibney made 27 saves in net for the Knights. Neumann did not take one penalty in the contest while it went 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
Neumann (6-4, 2-4 ECAC West) will host the US National Development team in an exhibition game on Dec. 13 at Ice Works, beginning at 3:00 PM. The Knights get back to regular season action on January 2 and 3 at the Middlebury College Tournament.
