ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University's men's hockey team celebrated senior day by completing the weekend sweep of Nazareth College, 5-2, in ECAC West action on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, seniors Dan McDougall, Chris Bournazos, Matt Mazzarolo and Ben Curley were honored.
Bournazos netted two goals, including the game-winner. Matt Gibney made 33 saves to pick up his second win of the weekend.
Mike Davis opened the scoring at the seven minute mark of the first period. Shayne Morrissey and Nick Perruccio tallied the assists. Two minutes later Brandon Gagne found the back of the net off assists from Shane Topf and Jory Mullin. The Knights took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Bournazos scored his first goal 4:34 into the second period on an unassisted goal to put Neumann up 3-0. Nazareth started to work on a come-back, like the night before. The Golden Flyers broke the scoreless bid midway through the second period. Nazareth then made the score 3-2 with a power play with 3:47 left in the second. The Knights went into the second intermission with the 3-2 lead.
Bournazos gave Neumann a two goal advantage with under five minutes left in regulation off an assist from fellow senior McDougall. Nazareth pulled its goalie to try and pull even. After three minutes of having an extra attacker, Liam Board was able to score an empty net goal with 18 seconds remaining and seal the win for the Knights.
Neumann (12-8-4, 8-5-1 ECAC West) is now tied with Nazareth (11-9-4, 7-4-3 ECAC West) in the conference standings. Postseason placement will come down to the final game of the regular season, when the Knights travel to Manhattanville on Friday evening. A win and Neumann will be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and receive a first round bye. Action gets underway at 7:00 PM.
