READING, Pa. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team fell in a close 11-10 overtime game at Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon to open the 2015 season.
Ron Lassiter led the Knights with three goals. Ryan O'Kane had two goals and an assist while picking up seven ground balls. Tylar Schlimme added two goals.
Bob Markunas and Michael Scalfaro stepped up and the lead the defense whileRyan Martin pushed the tempo up and down the field all day. Jordan Klunk and O'Kane both played hard at both ends of the field.
Lassiter scored the first two goals of the game as the Knights took an early lead. The Crusaders cut the lead to 2-1 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Neumann scored two of the first three goals for a 4-2 lead. Alvernia scored the next three goals to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Neumann opened the second half by scoring four straight goals to take an 8-5 lead. The Knights would hold a 9-8 lead after the first three quarters.
O'Kane put Neumann up 10-8 in the fourth quarter. Alvernia, however, would be able to knot the game at 10, tying the game with 2:20 left in regulation. The Crusaders were able to score the only goal of the overtime period to come away with the 11-10 win.
Neumann (0-1) starts a six game home stand on Wednesday when it hosts Wesley. Face-off is slated for 4:00 PM.
