ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team swept the doubleheader against Gwynedd Mercy University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Friday afternoon. Game scores were 7-0 and 10-6.
In game one, Neumann shutout Gwynedd Mercy 7-0. Allie White led off the home half of the first inning with a hit to become the leader on the Neumann's career list with 212, breaking Angela Sebasto's record of 211 (2005-09).
Danielle Grayson a two-run homerun and Kara Grogan led notched two hits.
Lauren Wilkie pitched a complete game shutout. She allowed three hits and struck out three to pick up her sixth victory of the year.
Neumann came out of the gate swinging. White led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With runners at first and third, Grogan would steal second and White came in to score on a fielding error. Grayson put two more runs on the board with her homerun to left field.
The Knights would go on to score one run in the second and three runs in the third for the 7-0 game one final.
In game two, the Knights had to come from behind to pick up the 10-6 victory. White had three hits, scored three runs and had three RBI to lead the Knights. Becky Guinto contributed three doubles and three RBI.
Kristin Beaty started the game and allowed six runs, two earned runs, on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Haley Broomell came in relief and pitched 4.1 shutout innings. She gave up one hit and struck out eight for her eighth win of the season.
Neumann started the game off on a positive note. Guinto hit one of her three doubles of the game in the bottom of the first to drive in two and give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Gwynedd Mercy answered with two runs in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the second, Neumann would jump to a 5-2 lead. Carla D'Angelo led off the inning with a single. With one out, the Knights hit back-to-back-to-back RBI hits.
Gwynedd Mercy put up a four spot in the top of the third to give the Griffins a 6-5 lead.
Neumann would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two unearned runs. White hit a homerun in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-6 lead. Guinto knocked in Melissa Bond to cap the scoring.
Neumann (20-4, 15-1 CSAC) will travel to Washington College (Md.) on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
