LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team won a thrilling game over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Cairn University 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Abu Donzo led the way for the Knights, figuring in both goals. Donzo scored the game-winner in overtime on a penalty kick and also tallied an assist on Neumann's first goal of the game scored by
Christian Cortese.
Neumann would open the scoring midway through the first half as Donzo beat a defender down the sideline and crossed a perfectly weighted ball to a streaking Cortese who headed the ball home to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The advantage would be short-lived however, as Cairn responded under a minute later off a set piece to level the score.
The second half saw both teams create golden opportunities, but it was Cairn who had the best chance to win the match. In the 78
th minute a Highlander attacker was taken down in the box for a penalty kick, but Neumann keeper
Dan Jones came up huge making a diving save to keep the score level.
The game would head to overtime and the Knights would waste no time finding a winner. Just 35 seconds into the extra session, Neumann was awarded a penalty kick after a great buildup. Freshman
Alex Vazquez played a fantastic through-ball to junior
Jake McDevitt who dribbled past the keeper and was about to finish the ball before being taken down in the box to draw the penalty. Donzo stepped up and calmly put the ball into the back of the net to seal the win.
Neumann (3-7, (1-1 CSAC)) next takes the field Wednesday, October 5
th when it faces Johns Hopkins University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
