LA PLUME, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team pulled out a hard fought 1-0 win over Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Tuesday evening.
Jake McDevitt scored the game-winner off a beautiful feed from
Liam Hill early in the second half.
Shane Smith picked up the shutout in net for the Knights.
Neumann knew it was in for a tough game as the Giants came into the match on top of the conference standings with an unblemished 5-0 record. The Knights would not be intimidated though, as they controlled play in the opening half, outshooting Keystone 8-4. Despite several quality opportunities, the game would head to halftime tied at 0-0.
The Knights would see their early first half momentum carry over to the second stanza. Just six minutes into the period, Hill slipped a perfectly weighted ball to a streaking McDevitt who found his way between two defenders before depositing the ball past the Keystone keeper for a 1-0 lead.
From there the Neumann defense would take over. The Giants pushed numbers forward trying to get an equalizer but the Knights had an answer for every attempt. The backline of
Jack Norwood,
Levi Massey,
Billy Swontek and
Tyler Williams played excellently, denying Keystone any shots on target the entire second half. The match would end 1-0 in the Knights favor, giving the team a much needed win as they look to climb back into the CSAC playoff race.
Neumann (4-11, 2-4 CSAC) will look to continue its momentum as the team heads to Clarks Summit University for a Saturday afternoon CSAC matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
