ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened up its season with a convincing 5-1 win over visiting Lebanon Valley College on Friday evening at IceWorks.
Bek Lucas stole the show on opening night, tallying a goal and four assists to play a part in each Neumann goal.
Grace Klienbach added a goal and two assists, while
Kelly Fox chipped in with a goal and an assist as well. Goalies
Julia Fair and
Helen Cooney combined for 10 saves in the win.
The Knights would open the scoring early, as Lucas banged home a rebound off a
Kate Blad shot just 19 seconds into the game to give Neumann a 1-0 lead.
Jordyn Cholish would double the Knights lead seven minutes later on the power play off a nice feed from Lucas to make it 2-0. Neumann would take the two goal lead into the first intermission, outshooting Lebanon Valley by a count of 20-3 in the opening stanza.
Neumann would continue its dominance in the second period as the team tallied three more goals in the frame to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Fox, Klienbach and
Steph Grundy each scored for the Knights in the period off of setups from Lucas. The junior forward was a dominant force throughout the period, driving play with her speed and creating numerous opportunities in the Lebanon Valley end.
The Flying Dutchmen got a goal back early in the third period, but that was as close as the game would get as Neumann would close out the game and win 5-1. Despite being held scoreless in the third period, the Knights continued to pepper the Lebanon Valley goal, finishing the game with a 63-11 edge in shots.
Neumann (1-0) is back in action tomorrow, October 29
th as it hosts Stevenson University in the second game of its opening weekend tournament. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
