ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team was edged in the final minute, 66-61, to the University of Scranton on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
Nafisa Saunders led the Knights with 23 points.
AAliya Hayes added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Scranton started the game by scoring the first seven points, the largest lead of the contest. A three-pointer by
Shauntel Williams started seven straight points for the Knights to tie the game midway through the first quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter and the Royals held a 15-12 lead at the first break.
A three-pointer by Saunders in the first minute of the second quarter gave Neumann its first lead of the game, 17-15. Saunders followed with a layup and a 19-15 Knights lead. The teams would be tied at 21 and again at 24 before Scranton ended the half scoring five of six points for a 29-25 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was no different with four lead changes and three tied scores. Scranton held a slim one point lead, 42-41, heading into the final 10 minutes.
With 2:12 remaining in regulation, the teams were tied for the 10
th time in the game, this time at 59. No one would find the basket until there was 39 seconds on the clock when the Royals hit the go-ahead basket. Scranton would connect on key free throws in the final seconds, going 5-for-6 from the line, to seal the win.
Neumann (2-3) will open conference action on Saturday when it hosts Marywood beginning at 2:00 PM.
