PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team picked up its second win in as many days with a 4-0 victory over Plattsburgh State to take home the W.B. Mason Winter Classic Championship.
Freshman goalie
Anthony Pupplo was outstanding in net for Neumann in the win, making 56 saves on 57 shots. The Knights received balanced scoring in the win, as seven different players scored on the day including
Collin O'Neil,
Shane Topf,
Ryan Luiten,
Anthony Pino,
Liam Board,
Matt Zendejas and
Thomas Mansbridge.
Jake Davidson led the team in points on the day with five assists.
Neumann knew it would have its hands full playing against the tournament host Cardinals, but came out strong registering the game's first three shots. The Knights early pressure would be rewarded just 6:49 into the game, as O'Neill scored to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors. Neumann would be heavily outshot the remainder of the period, but Pupplo was a stalwart in goal making 19 saves to preserve the lead headed into the first intermission.
The second period began much like the first ended, with Plattsburgh State applying tons of pressure in the Neumann zone. The Cardinals would generate 13 of the period's first 15 shots but Pupplo continued to be a rock in goal to keep the Knights in the lead. Neumann would find their skating legs midway through the period and would score a second goal at the 11:41 mark of the period as Topf found the back of the net to double the lead. The Knights would keep their foot on the pedal in the second half of the period, adding two more goals to boost the lead to four. Liuten scored with just over five minutes left in the frame on the power play, and Pino tallied shorthanded with a minute to play. Despite being outshot 20-14 in the frame, Neumann would head to the third period with a commanding lead.
Plattsburgh State would continue to press in the third period looking for their first goal and were finally rewarded with a tally at the 13:22 mark. The goal would be the lone bright spot of the day for the Cardinals though, as Neumann would respond with three unanswered goals of their own by Board, Zendejas and Mansbridge late in the game to walk away with a convincing 7-1 win and the tournament championship.
For his solid play in net over the course of the weekend, Pupplo was named tournament MVP. Joining the freshman goalie on the all-tournament team were
Liam Board,
Jory Mullin and
Lauri Viitanen.
Neumann (10-3-1) will be back in action next weekend as it travels to Massachusetts for the Endicott Holiday Invitational. The Knights will take on host Endicott College on Saturday, January 7
