ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Centenary College 74-66 on Monday evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) first round game.
JoHanna Metzger led the Knights with a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding 10 rebounds.
Nafisa Saunders also netted 15 points, nine coming from the charity line, and handed out four assists.
Lauren Legler added 14 points while going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Sarah Roberts contributed 12 points and
Shauntel Williams added 11.
The first quarter was a battle with six tied scores. With 1:37 remaining, Saunders tied the game at 13 with a free throw. The Knights went on to add six more points to take a six points advantage, 19-13, after the first quarter.
The Cyclones came out scoring first in the second quarter. With the Knights leading 26-17, Centenary went on an 8-2 run to get within three, 28-25, with 2:56 on the clock. Over the last three minutes, the Knights scored six of the eight points to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.
The teams opened the second half by trading baskets back and forth. Midway through the third quarter, the Knights took its largest lead, 46-33. Neumann would take a 12 points advantage, 52-40, heading into the final quarter.
Centenary opened the final 10 minutes on a 10-5 run to get within seven, 57-50. A lot of action came in the final minute of regulation. With 30 seconds on the clock, The Knights lead by five, 68-63. Each team went 1-for-2 from the line and it remained a five point game with 15 seconds remaining.
Legler then went 3-for-4 from the line after the Cyclones were called for a foul and a technical foul and increased the Knights lead to eight, 72-64. The teams again traded free throws, with both going 2-for-2, over the final 11 seconds and Neumann came away with the 74-66 win.
With the win, Neumann (16-10) advances to the CSAC semifinals and will travel to No. 1 seeded Marywood University on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 PM.
