SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 4 seeded Neumann University women's basketball team upset No. 1 seeded Marywood University 63-58 on Wednesday evening a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinal game.
Lauren Legler hit three from beyond the arc to lead the Knights with 18 points.
AAliya Hayes notched a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds.
Nafisa Saunders added 15 points.
JoHanna Metzger pulled down 13 boards.
The first quarter went back and forth between the teams. A jumper by Shanutel Williams put the Knights up 12-8 with 23 second left on the clock. The Pacers knocked down a three-pointer with 11 seconds left for a 12-11 game after the first 10 minutes.
The Pacers opened the second quarter scoring the first eight points to take a 19-12 lead. A three-pointer by Legler halted the Pacer's run. After the teams traded baskets, Marywood took a 25-20 lead into halftime.
Marywood built its lead up to 11, 39-28, with 2:16 left in the third quarter. Neumann then scored the next seven points to get back within four, 39-35. The Pacers hit a jumper to end the half and take a 43-37 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The Knights scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to take a 44-43 lead. Over the next eight minutes, there would be four lead changes. A Pacers layup with 1:47 left in regulation tied the game at 57. Legler connected on another three-pointer for a 60-57 advantage. In the final minute, the teams traded free throws and the Knights maintained their three point lead.
Sarah Roberts sealed the win and punched the ticket to the CSAC Championship with when she sank two free throws with six seconds remaining.
With the win, Neumann (17-10) advances to the CSAC Championship game on Saturday. This is the first appearance in the Championship game for Neumann since it won the title in 2010-11. The Knights will travel to No. 3 Cabrini. The Cavaliers defeated Gwynedd Mercy 67-55 in the other semifinal game.
