Softball Opens 2016 with a Split in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Neumann University softball team split a pair of games in its opening day of the 2016 season. The Knights defeated Ohio Northern 8-2 and then fell to Wartburg 12-8.
 
In the 8-2 win, all nine players each had a hit. Marisa Giordano and Becky Guinto had a pair of hits and a RBI. Danielle Grayson a double and a sacrifice fly. Kara Grogan hit a triple.
 
Julia Cox, Julia Malseed, and Jewell Ringgold each picked up their first collegiate hit.
 
Ohio Northern took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Knights got on the board in the fourth inning. Grogan started the inning hitting a triple. Grayson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Grogan.
 
The Knights scored at least one run in each inning from then on taking away their 12-8 victory.
 
Haley Broomell went 7.0 innings. She allowed eight hits and two earned runs.
 
Against Wartburg College, Neumann loss 12-8. Melissa Bond went 2-for-4 including a double with two RBIs and scored runs. Cox also went 2-for-4 and hit her first collegiate double. Grayson had a double and knocked in a run. Grogan had two RBIs.
 
The Knights took a 4-0 lead first in the second inning. Cox started the inning with a double. The next two batters were walked. Bond then hit a double knocking in two runs. Melissa Rozumalski hit a sacrifice fly to score the third run.  
 
Neumann (1-1) will face Saint Mary's University and John Carroll University tomorrow in Clermont.
