ALLAMUCHY, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team came away with a sweep against Centenary College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The scores were 4-2 and 5-4, both going eight innings.
In game one, the Knights picked up a 4-2 victory in eight innings.
Chuck Trentler and
Kye Williams led the Knights with two hits. Williams had three RBIs and a double.
Zach Cooney started for the Knights and went 3.2 innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.
Zach Youngberg came in relief to pick up his first win of the season and pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out three.
Anthony Stricker completed the eighth innings, getting two outs for the save.
Centenary got on board first on a RBI double in the bottom of the first. Neumann would get on board in the top of the third. Trentler reached on a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Williams up the middle.
The teams would play the seven innings, remaining knotted at one. In the eighth inning, the first five Knights would reach base.
Jonathan DelValle led off with a single up the middle.
Spencer Young reached first on a throwing error and DelValle advanced to second.
Sam Banks drove DelValle in with a single up the middle. Williams doubled down the left field line to score Young and Banks for the 4-1 lead.
The Cyclones hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth, but wasn't enough as Neumann took the win 4-2.
In game two, Neumann took a close victory 5-4, again in eight innings.
Eric Bergman led the Knights with three hits. Williams drove in two runs while Trentler scored two runs.
Grant Wallace started for Neumann and went 5.2 innings. He gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits and struck out five.
Chris Rupprecht came in in relief and allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings while striking out five to pick up the win.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third. The Cyclones reached the board first on an unearned run. Neumann answered back in the fourth, scoring four runs. With one out,
Curt Yenchik started the rally with a solo homerun. The Knights took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and an error to add to their lead. Williams and Bergman each forced in a run with their walks.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cyclones answered with three runs to tie the game at four.
Once again, after playing seven innings, the game would go into extras. Trentler led off with a double to left center and came around to score the eventual game-winning run on a single by Williams.
Neumann shut down the Cyclones in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game with a backwards K.
Neumann (7-8, 3-0 CSAC) will travel to Rowan University on Tuesday. First pitch is slated at 3:30 PM.
