ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Widener University on Wednesday afternoon. Game scores were 12-9 and 5-2.
In the first game, the Pride put three runs on the board in the top of the first.
Becky Guinto hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 game.
The Knights then plated four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.
Julia Cox was hit by a pitch and
Sarah Murray walked to lead off the inning.
Jackie Schneider reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
Mary Cotton singled to left to score
Jen Leinheiser, who pinch ran for Cox. Murray scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kendall Boardman.
Melissa Rozumalski then tripled to score Schneider and Cotton.
In the fourth and fifth innings, Widener capitalized on some Neumann errors to score nine runs, only three earned, and take a 12-5 lead.
Neumann scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two coming on bases loaded walks, and a sacrifice fly by Rozumalski. Guinto and Murray both doubled in the bottom of the seventh, but the Knights could only score one run and fell 12-9 in game one.
Michaela Pembleton started the game and went 4.2 innings. She allowed 12 runs, just six earned, on 10 hits and struck out three.
Taylor Naman went 2.1 innings and allowed one hit.
In game two, Naman started the game and went 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.
Lauren Wilkie went 4.1 innings and allowed one run while striking out two.
Widener scored two runs in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Cox drew a walk and scored on a double by
Danielle Grayson. The Pride put two more runs on the board in the top of the second.
Grayson reached in the fourth inning on an error and came around to score on a double by Murray for the Knights' second run. Widener added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Neumann put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth but stranded both. The game was then called due to darkness.
Neumann (20-14) will wrap up conference action this weekend. The Knights will travel to Cairn on Friday and then host Summit on Saturday.
