ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team won its second straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Title with a 9-4 win over Cabrini College on Sunday afternoon.
Lauren Wilkie was named to tournament Most Valuable Player as she picked up a win in the semifinal game and in the Championship game.
Wilkie went 4.0 innings in relief in the win. She didn't allow a run on five hits and struck out three.
Haley Broomell started the game and went 3.0 innings. She allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out six.
Cabrini got on the board in the first inning as the lead-off walk came around to score.
Jackie Schneider then hit a two-run single to put Neumann in the lead in the bottom of the second.
Both teams scored three runs in the third inning. After the Cavaliers took a 4-2 lead with five straight hits, including three doubles, the Knights answered and took back their one-run advantage. With one out,
Julia Cox reached on an error.
Danielle Grayson then singled. Schneider knocked in
Jewell Ringgold, who ran for Cox.
Sarah Murray then hit a two-run double to score
Julia Malseed, who ran for Grayson, and Schneider.
Grayson gave Neumann an insurance run with a solo homerun in the fifth inning.
In the Cavaliers half of the sixth inning, they loaded the bases with three straight singles and no outs. Wilkie was able get the next two batter to strike out looking and then get a fielders choice to get out of the inning.
The Knights took the momentum and scored three more runs in their half of the sixth inning.
Becky Guinto hit an RBI single to score
Melissa Rozumalski. Cox then knocked a two-run double to plate Grogan and Guinto.
Cabrini hit a two-out double in the seventh, but Neumann clamped down and got the final out for to win the championship.
Neumann (26-14) will now wait for the NCAA Tournament selection announcement on Monday to see where it will head for more postseason action.
