ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team picked up a dramatic 2-1 win in overtime over Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Christian Cortese played a part in both goals for Neumann, registering the game-winning goal and an assist.
Jake McDevitt added his fourth goal in the past two matches to round out Neumann's scoring.
The match started well for Neumann, who looked to be a much more confident side following its first win of the season this past Wednesday versus Stevenson University. Both teams traded early chances, but the Knights were rewarded first when McDevitt found the back of the net after a nice passing sequence between Cortese and fellow junior
Billy Swontek. Neumann would hold the lead until late in the half, when Salisbury would equalize in the 37
th minute off a set piece.
The second half was tightly contested and saw both teams pressing forward for the winner. Despite numerous chances in both directions, the game would head to overtime level at one.
The Knights would not waste much time getting the winner in the extra session. Following a foul called just outside the box in the Salisbury end, Cortese rifled home a winner on the ensuing free kick just under five minutes into overtime. Goalie
Shane Smith picked up the win for the Knights, notching six saves on the day.
Head Coach
Tim Hollenback was extremely proud of his players following the team's two wins this week. "We didn't start the year as we would have hoped, but to their credit the boys bounced back in a big way this past week", said Hollenback. "The players could have felt bad for themselves after the slow start, but instead they worked their tails off this week in our practice sessions and that hard work carried us to two results."
Neumann (2-4) next takes the field on Tuesday for a non-conference match versus Randolph-Macon College. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
