ASTON, Pa. –
AAliya Hayes scored her 1,000
th career point as the Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers University-Camden 83-68 on Monday evening.
Hayes finished the game with 32 points and 17 rebounds.
Mariah Maciejewski added 20 points and 11 boards.
Lauren Legler hit five three-pointers and finished with 19 points.
The Knights took a quick 7-0 lead two minutes into the game. The Scarlet Raptors got on the board with the nest basket at the 6:18 mark. Neumann held an 18-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Neumann increased its lead to 14, 30-26, midway through the second quarter. Rutgers-Camden answered by scoring the next 10 points. The Knights finished the half on a 7-0 run for a 37-26 lead heading into halftime.
With 30.9 seconds left before halftime, Hayes was fouled. She went 1-for-2 from the line. That free throw marked the 1,000
th point of her career.
Hayes hit two free throws midway through the third quarter for a 46-32 lead. Rutgers-Camden then started to make its run and with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter, tied the game at 49. Maciejewski connected on a layup with seven seconds left for a 51-49 score heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Knights came out on fire for the fourth quarter and built up a 64-53 lead in the first four minutes. This time the Scarlet Raptors did not make a comeback and the Knight came away with the 83-68 win.
Neumann (7-6) gets back into conference action on Wednesday when it heads to Immaculata. Action gets underway at 6:00 PM.
