ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team won its second consecutive United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest on Saturday afternoon, downing visiting Elmira College by a score of 5-2.
Jake Davidson was a one-man wrecking crew for the Knights, notching a hat trick to go along with a pair of assists for a five-point night.
Eric Madison chipped in a pair of assists, while
Chris Ordoobadi and
Liam Board also tallied goals for Neumann. Goalie
Sammy Bernard was excellent in goal, stopping 29 shots in the win.
Neumann opened the game strong, taking an early lead through Davidson's first goal at the 8:12 mark of the first period. Madison drove hard towards the goal and the puck ricocheted to a streaking Davidson who slammed the loose puck home to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Neumann doubled that lead just under three minutes later, as a point shot from Davidson was deflected by Ordoobadi and into the net to put the Knights up by a pair at 2-0. Neumann looked to be heading to intermission with the two-goal lead intact, but a late power play goal by Elmira with 23 seconds left in the period cut the lead in half as the game moved to the second stanza.
Davidson continued to assert his dominance on the day as play resumed in the second. The senior defenseman brought the lead back to two goals at the 1:13 mark of the period, rifling home a laser of wrist shot to the top corner of the net to put the Knights up 3-1. Elmira scored at the 4:06 mark to again make it a one-goal deficit, but it would be all Neumann from there. Davidson finished off his hat trick with a goal at 5:35, followed by assisting on a beautiful back-handed tally from Board on the power play late in the frame to complete his five-point night. The Knights would to the second intermission with a comfortable 5-2 advantage and a 24-20 edge in shots.
Neumann used a solid defensive effort in the third and final period of play to seal the win. Using excellent goaltending from Bernard, the Knights shut-out Elmira in the period and skated home with a big 5-2 conference win.
Neumann (3-3-1, 3-1-1 UCHC) has a two-week break before returning to the ice on Friday, December 1
st for a UCHC matchup at Stevenson University. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
