CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the season, 71-44, at Widener University on Tuesday evening.
Nafisa Saunders hit double-digits for the Knights with 10 points.
Minika Glenn and
Lauren Leicht each added nine points.
Mariah Maciejewski grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Pride opened the game by scoring nine of the first 14 points over the first three and a half minutes. Saunders hit a layup to break a two-minute scoreless drought, followed by a three-pointer by
Lauren Legler to tie the game at nine. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the half and remained tied after the first quarter, 14-14.
To start the second quarter, the Knights went on an 11-2 run to take a 25-16 lead. The Pride answered by scoring the next seven points for a 25-23 score. Legler and Saunders connected on baskets in the final minute of the half and Neumann took a 29-23 lead into halftime.
The Pride scored the first five points of the third quarter to get to within one. The Knights went back up by five, 35-30, with 5:30 left in the third. However, Widener ended the quarter on a 14-1 run, with Neumann's lone point coming on a free throw just before the end of the quarter. The Pride took the 44-36 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Widener kept the foot on the petal in the fourth quarter and kept control of the game, steadily building its lead throughout the final quarter.
Neumann (2-2) will head to Scranton next Monday for more road action. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
