Women's Hockey Wins Commonwealth Cup Championship

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team picked up its second win in as many days to claim the Commonwealth Cup Championship over host Chatham University by a score of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Bek Lucas continued to be a dominant force for the Knights in the win with another two goals. Zoe Harkins also scored for Neumann, who received superb goaltending from Julia Fair (32 saves).

The Knights jumped out in front with two goals midway through the first period to take an early 2-0 lead. Lucas found the back of the net at the 11:39 mark for her 5th goal of the season followed by Harkins' first marker of the year just 57 seconds later. Chatham answered back with a goal with under a minute left to play in the period, but the Knights took a 2-1 lead to the first intermission.

A penalty filled second period saw the Knights concede a second goal to the Cougars to tie the score up at two apiece. Chatham controlled play in the second stanza, outshooting Neumann 16-9 to take momentum heading into the final period of play.

Lucas did her best to kill that momentum, guiding the Knights to a much better period in the third. With the game still tied late in the period, the senior forward put the finishing touches on her tournament MVP winning performance, scoring an unassisted goal with 3:10 left to play to lift Neumann to the 3-2 win.

Neumann (2-1-1) is back on the ice next Friday, November 10th when it opens United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play at home versus Manhattanville College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
