CAMDEN, N.J. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers University – Camden 77-69 on Monday evening in non-conference action.
Nafisa Saunders led four Knights in double-digits with a game-high 20 points.
Lauren Leicht netted 13 points, including 7-for-9 at the line.
Minika Glenn scored 11 points while
Mariah Maciejewski added 10. All eight players scored at last three points in the win.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the game by scoring the first nine points. A three-pointer by Leicht put the Knights on the board and started seven straight points for Neumann. A layup by Maciejewski with 3:03 left in the first quarter tied the game at 11. Rutgers-Camden took back the lead with one minute left on the clock.
Kristen Denoncour went 1-for-2 from the free throw line with 41 seconds left to pull back within one, 13-12, after the first 10 minutes.
Over the first five minutes of the second quarter, the Scarlet Raptors built a seven point advantage, 27-20. Two free throws by Denoncour started seven straight points for the Knights to tie the game. After trading baskets, Glenn connected on a three-pointer to start Neumann on an 11-1 run to end the quarter and take a 40-30 lead into halftime.
The teams played equally throughout the third quarter and the Knights held a 59-48 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Neumann built up a lead as large as 15 points during the final quarter. With under a minute remaining, Rutgers-Camden hit a three-pointer to get back to within six, 73-67. Leicht and Saunders hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the win and prevent the comeback attempt.
Neumann (5-3) will head to Catholic on Saturday as it continues the four-game road trip. Action is slated to get underway at 4:00 PM.
