Men's Ice Hockey Falls in Overtime to Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team began its road trip to upstate New York by falling 3-2 in overtime to host Nazareth College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action on Friday night.

The Knights received goals from Jake Davidson and Ryan Swain on the evening. Anthony Pupplo continued his excellent play in net, making 32 saves in the loss.

In a rematch of last season's ECAC West quarterfinal, Neumann took control of the play early on. Each team would notch ten shots on goal in the period, but the Knights found the back of the net twice to take an early 2-0 lead. Swain scored midway through the frame off a feed from Corey Kennedy to get the scoring started. The goal was the sophomore forward's team-leading seventh of the season. Davidson added to the Knights' lead with just 11 seconds to play in the period off assists from Glenn Florczak and Clayton Boyd.

Despite another evenly played period, Nazareth would fight back in the second stanza. Using a similar formula as the Knights, the Golden Flyers scored once midway through the period to cut the lead in half, then tallied in the final minute of play to knot the contest up at two apiece. Both teams registered 14 shots in the frame and the game headed to the third knotted up in both goals and shots.

Each team pushed hard for a winner in the final period of play, but both goaltenders were outstanding in keeping the game tied. The Knights had a few quality chances late in regulation via the power-play, but could not find a goal as the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, the Golden Flyers finally broke through. On a delayed penalty just under a minute into overtime, Nazareth redirected a shot from the point that found its way past Pupplo to seal the win.

Neumann (4-4-1, 4-2-1 UCHC) will look to regroup tomorrow when it heads to Utica College for another UCHC matchup. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
