Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey Downed by Utica

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's hockey team dropped an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West matchup to Utica College by a score of 4-1 on Friday evening.

Grace Klienbach tallied the Knights lone goal of the game, off assists from Sammy Patrick and Mollie Johnson. Helen Cooney got the start in goal, making 32 saves in the loss.

Neumann came out of the gates flying, taking the play to the Pioneers in the game's opening minutes. After some nice passing in the Utica end, Klienbach would take a pass from Patrick and sneak a low shot past the Pioneer net-minder to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead at the 3:27 mark. Unfortunately for Neumann, Utica would answer right back with a goal of their own just 13 seconds later to knot the game up. Undaunted by the quick equalizer, the Knights would continue to create a bulk of the game's early chances. Despite outshooting the Pioneers by a count of 11-7, it would be Utica who would take the lead late in the stanza. The Pioneers would score shorthanded at the 14:32 mark to take a 2-1 lead heading the second period.

The Knights looked to get back into the game in the second period, but Utica would get stronger as the game progressed. The Pioneers would fire 16 shots at the Neumann net during the period and would be rewarded midway through the frame. A seemingly harmless shot would deflect off a Neumann shin-pad and past Cooney to give Utica a two-goal cushion as the game moved to the third period.

The final period would see the Pioneers add to their lead. A seeing-eye shot from the point midway through the period found its way off the post and into the net to give Utica a commanding 4-1 lead. The Knights would try to fight their way back with a few late chances, but the Pioneers would shut the door and claim a 4-1 road victory.

Neumann (6-13-3, 2-10-3) and Utica are right back in action for the second of their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM. Prior to the game, the Knights will recognize their seniors, who will be playing in their last career home game.
