Men's Hockey Battles to 3-3 Tie at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team tallied another huge point in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West standings with a 3-3 tie at fifth ranked Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

Three different Knights scored in the tie, including Liam Board, Zac Lazzaro and Shane Topf. Freshman goaltender Anthony Pupplo kept Neumann in the game, making an outstanding 57 saves on 60 Hobart shots.

The Knights would pick up right where they left off last night after their convincing 5-1 win over Elmira College. Lazzaro would find the back of the net just 1:46 into the game off an assist from line-mate Anthony Pino to give Neumann an early 1-0 lead. In addition to the goal, the Knights would also receive a power-play, as a Hobart player was sent to the box for cross-checking after the goal was scored.  Neumann would take full advantage of the penalty, as Board scored a second goal just thirty seconds into the ensuing power play to make it 2-0 just 2:15 into the game. After the second goal, Hobart found their skating legs and took the play to the Knights for the remainder of the period. Outshooting Neumann by a count of 23-8 in the period, the Statesmen got a goal back late in the period to make it 2-1 heading to the second.

The second stanza would again see the Knights heavily out-shot, but it would be Neumann who would capitalize on its chances first in the period. Midway through the frame, Topf scored his 14th goal of the season to reestablish the two-goal cushion. The Statesmen would throw 19 more shots on the Neumann goal in the period, but Pupplo came up huge time and again to keep the Knights ahead by two. Despite the freshman net-minder's fantastic work in the crease, Hobart again answered back late in the period, scoring a power-play goal with under four minutes remaining to send the game to the third with a score of 3-2 in favor of Neumann.

The Statesmen would waste no time knotting the game up in the final frame. Hobart would score just 48 seconds into the period to tie the game up at three apiece, setting up a wild finish for both teams. The Knights would generate a few quality chances to go back ahead, but were forced to hang on late as Hobart continued to apply pressure in the Neumann end. After allowing the tying goal, Pupplo was a stalwart between the pipes for the Knights, stopping 17 pucks in the final period and overtime to keep the game tied. Despite being outshot 60-23 on the afternoon, the Knights skated away with a 3-3 tie and with a hard-earned point in the standings.

Neumann (14-7-3, 6-6-1 ECAC West) returns home for its final regular season game next Friday, February 17th versus Manhattanville College at 7:00 PM. Prior to the game, the Knights will recognize their 14 seniors who will be playing in their final regular season home game for Neumann.
