ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's lacrosse team celebrated senior day with a highly entertaining, back and forth game versus Marywood University on Saturday afternoon. Despite a fantastic effort, the Knights fell to the Pacers by a score of 13-10.
Chase Fraser continued to dominate the statistical charts, notching six goals and 10 ground balls on the day.
Adam Fagan notched a pair of goals of his own, while
Chris Augustine and
Ryan Martin also scored for Neumann.
Brendan Risley was excellent in goal, making several brilliant stops en route to a game total of 18 saves.
Fraser wasted no time getting the scoring started on senior day. The senior attacker won the opening face-off cleanly, sprinted downfield and rifled home the game's first tally just four seconds into the game to set a new NCAA Division III record for quickest goal to start a game. Fraser's goal was one second faster than the previous record of five seconds, which was set back in 2011.
The remainder of the opening period of play was back and forth between the two teams. Augustine scored at the 10:16 mark to give the Knights a two goal cushion, but Marywood responded with a pair of goals of their own to knot the game up at two apiece. With the game tied late in the quarter, Fraser answered back off a nice feed from
Harris Walker to put the Knights up 3-2 headed to the second stanza.
Marywood would take over control of the game in the second quarter. The Knights offense went cold, mustering just eight shots in the period and no goals. While Neumann struggled, the Pacers offense found a groove. Using four unanswered goals, Marywood took a 6-3 lead to halftime.
The game of runs continued in the third quarter. Just as Marywood did in the second stanza, Neumann used momentum to seize control of the game in the third frame. A nifty behind the back goal by Fagan off a nice feed from
Ryan Lee at the 10:28 mark of the quarter set into motion a six goal run that put the Knights back in front. Neumann would tally five more consecutive goals in the quarter, led by three from Fraser to jump back in the lead by a count of 9-6.
As the game moved to the fourth and final frame, Marywood had one more counter-punch up its sleeve. In a span of just four minutes at the start of the final quarter, the Pacers scored six times to retake the lead. Marywood tacked on another goal midway through the quarter before Fraser's sixth goal of the game made it 13-10 with 4:42 left to play. Unfortunately for the Knights, that was as close as they would get, as Marywood killed off the final few minutes and walked away with the road win.
Neumann (2-5) has a week off before returning to action with a home conference game versus Centenary University on Saturday, April 1
st. Game-time is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
