Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Stockton

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Stockton University on Thursday afternoon. The Knights took game one 3-2 in walk off fashion. The Ospreys answered in game two, winning 13-9.

In game one, Stockton scored in the top of the first inning. The 1-0 score held until the top of the fifth inning when the Ospreys took a 2-0 lead.

Neumann responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Marisa Giordano reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Kristina Del Gaiso. Giordano came around to score on a single by Kara Grogan.

The Knights had runners on second and third in the sixth inning with one out, but could not get the tying run across the plate.

Autumn Passarello led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. Grogan walked and Becky Guinto hit into a fielder choice. Jackie Schneider walked to load the bases with one out. Julia Cox hit a blooper into center field and Grogan and Guinto scored for the 3-2 Knights win.

Jen Sieminski went the distance in the circle for the win. She allowed two runs on eight hits.

Game two was a different story with 22 runs scored in the game, including two three-run shots by the Ospreys.

The Knights jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The teams then traded three runs each in the second inning for a 6-3 Knights lead after two innings.

The fifth and sixth innings were big ones for Stockton as it score 10 runs in the two innings. Only half of the runs were earned and Neumann had some defensive miscues in the innings.

The Knights were not going to go quietly in the seventh inning. Passarello led off with a single. The next two batters were retired and Schneider continued the game with a walk. Cox knocked in both Passarello and Schneider and came around to score on a single by Kate Korte'. That was all the nights were able to get and the comeback fell short.

Haley Broomell started the game and went 5.0 innings. She allowed seven runs, only four earned on seven hits. Taylor Naman went the final two innings.

Neumann (18-10) gets back into conference action tomorrow as its hosts Keystone for a pair of games beginning at 3:00 PM.
