Softball Drops a Pair at Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team dropped a pair of games at Marywood University on Friday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. The Pacers won the back and forth first game 12-9 before taking game two 8-0 in five innings.
 
In the first game, Neumann jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Jackie Schneider hit a two-run double with one out to score Marisa Giordano and Becky Guinto. With two outs, Melissa Bond knocked in Schneider with an RBI single and came around to score on a single by Grace Sperrazza.
 
Marywood plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 4-3 Knights lead after one inning.
 
The Knights took advantage of a Pacers error and Julia Cox knocked a two-run double to score two more runs in the second inning for a 6-3 lead. The Pacers scored three runs in the home half of the second for a 6-all games.
 
Neumann took back the lead, 7-6, as Giordano scored Sperrazza on an RBI ground out in the third inning. Sperrezza knocked in Bond in the fourth inning for an 8-6 game. Marywood would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game again.
 
Schneider led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and scored on Sperrazza's third RBI single of the game. Marywood tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth inning and then used a Neumann defensive miscue to score three more runs and take a 12-9 lead. The Knights went down in order in the top of the seventh to fall in the first game 12-9.
 
Haley Broomell started the game and went 3.0 innings and struck out four. Taylor Sirolli took the loss, going the final three innings.
 
In game two, the Pacers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Knights had two runners on base in the fourth inning, but could not get a run across. Marywood scored its eighth run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jen Sieminski pitched a complete game in the circle.
 
Neumann (23-13, 17-3 CSAC) will wrap up the regular season tomorrow as it hosts Cabrini University for a CSAC doubleheader. First pitch is at 1:00 PM.
