ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a commanding 5-0 win over visiting Clarks Summit University.
Jake McDevitt notched his second career hat trick in the win, while also adding an assist.
Jack Norwood and
Rod Bradbury also scored for Neumann, who received solid goaltending from the tandem of
Perry Corsetti and
Danny Lewis.
The Knights controlled play from the opening whistle, generating the game's first 10 shots to take a stranglehold on the match. Despite the pressure in the Clarks Summit end, the game would remain scoreless until the 26
th minute. Sophomore
Brady Simon worked his way down the left flank before finding a wide open McDevitt, who rifled a ball past the Defenders keeper to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Neumann would outshoot Clarks Summit by a count of 18-1 in the opening period of play, but would settle for just a one goal advantage at halftime.
Neumann wasted no time putting the game away early in the second half. Just 55 seconds out of halftime, senior
Christian Cortese found space down the right flank and whipped in an excellent cross to a streaking McDevitt, who headed home his second goal of the game to put the Knights up 2-0. Neumann continued to press forward and were rewarded with a third goal just nine minutes later. Freshman
Marlon Trejo took a pass from McDevitt off a corner kick and delivered a perfect ball into the box that was finished by Norwood to give the Knights a comfortable three goal lead. McDevitt would cap off his excellent performance with another goal at the 67:01 mark, before Bradbury sealed the 5-0 win with a penalty kick in the 85
th minute. Shots for the game would finish at 40-4 in favor of the Knights.
Neumann (3-4, 1-0 CSAC) will get right back to conference action next week, when it heads to Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 PM.
