GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team continued its torrid start to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a dominant 8-0 win over host Gwynedd Mercy University on a hot Tuesday afternoon.
Brady Simon (2 goals, 2 assists),
Jake McDevitt (2 goals, 1 assist) and
Christian Cortese (1 goal, 1 assist) each had a multiple point game for the Knights. Neumann also received solo tallies from
Steven Matalavage,
Jon Cobb and
Matt Sengphachanh.
Perry Corsetti and
Danny Lewis combined for the shutout win, making two saves in the process.
Neumann continued right where it left off in last Saturday's conference opening win over Clarks Summit. The Knights peppered the Gwynedd Mercy goal early and often, outshooting the Griffins by a count of 14-2 in the first period of play to get off to a great start. Simon opened the scoring at the 14:06 mark, striking a ball to the side netting of the goal from the left flank to put Neumann out in front 1-0.
From there, the first half floodgates would open. Just four minutes later, Matalavage banged home his first goal of the season after some excellent skill on the end-line from McDevitt to put the visitors up by a pair. Simon would then make it 3-0 with his second goal of the contest in the 24
th minute off a feed from Cortese, before assisting McDevitt on Neumann's fourth goal of the half at the 30:17 mark. The Knights would take a comfortable 4-0 lead to halftime.
Eager to put together a full 90-minute effort, Neumann continued to work hard in the second half. Four different Knights would score in the period including Cortese (53
rd minute), McDevitt (59
th minute), Cobb (73
rd minute) and Sengphachanh (89
th minute) to round out the scoring. Shots in the match would finish 27-4 in favor of Neumann, while the Knights also held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Neumann (4-4, 2-0 CSAC) returns home to face conference rival Keystone University on Saturday, September 30
th. Kick-off versus the Giants is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
