ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team rallied late to skate away with a 4-4 tie versus United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Manhattanville College on Friday evening.
Ryan Swain was the leader of Neumann's attack on the evening, registering a goal and an assist.
Joe Mitchell,
Chris Caldwell and
Corey Kennedy also scored for the Knights, who received excellent goaltending from senior net-minder
Matt Gibney (35 saves).
Playing in its first home game since mid-November, the Knights came out with a ton of energy early, scoring two goals in the game's first five minutes of play to take a quick 2-0 lead. Mitchell got the scoring started, banging home a rebound off a
Liam Board shot for his 10
th goal of the season and eighth in his last five games. Caldwell added the team's second tally a minute and a half later, jamming home a loose puck to the side of the net to put the Knights up by a pair.
Despite the great start, the remainder of the opening period of play would belong to Manhattanville. The Valiants out-shot the Knights by a count of 18-6 in the frame and got a goal back late in the period to make it 2-1 Neumann headed to the second.
The visitors continued to control play into the second stanza, recording the period's only two goals. Using five Neumann penalties to their advantage, the Valiants tallied twice on the power play to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
The final period of play saw momentum swings for both teams. Neumann came out strong in the period looking to knot the game up at three, but a Valiant goal midway through the period doubled the Manhattanville lead and set the stage for a wild final ten minutes of play.
Needing a pair of goals to get the game leveled, Neumann got the break they needed when a Swain wrist shot found the back of the net at the 10:33 mark to bring the game back to a one-goal differential. The Knights then kept the momentum rolling, as Kennedy deflected a point shot from
Nick Minerva to tie the contest up at four apiece with just under eight minutes left to play. Neumann carried the play late, drawing a pair of penalties in the final five minutes to set up a 5-on-3 power play, but the team could not convert and the game would head to overtime at 4-4.
The Knights kept pressing for a winner in the extra session and were awarded another power-play late in overtime. Unfortunately, the hosts could not find a winner and the game would finish tied at four. Shots for the game finished 39-34 in favor of Manhattanville.
Neumann (5-12-2, 5-4-2 UCHC) returns to home ice tomorrow for its second UCHC matchup of the weekend, this time against King's College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
