ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team stayed unbeaten in Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday afternoon, picking up a 3-1 win over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University on Senior Day.
Gavin Ford paced the Knights attack, playing a part in each of Neumann's three goals. The freshman forward scored a goal, added an assist and drew a penalty kick.
Marlon Trejo and
Andrew Kelly also scored for Neumann in the win, while
Shane Smith and
Danny Lewis combined for one save in goal.
After a three game absence in the Neumann lineup over the past two weeks due to injury, Ford made the most of his return to action. The freshman standout helped the Knights jump out to a furious start, creating three goals in the game's first five minutes to give Neumann a lead it would never relinquish.
Just 1:08 into the contest, Ford got onto the end of an excellent through-ball from
Brady Simon and was fouled by the Griffin keeper to set up a penalty shot for the Knights. Trejo stepped up to the spot and banged home his 6
th goal of the season to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The hosts would double their lead just 47 seconds later after a foul deep in the Gwynedd Mercy end gave Neumann a free kick opportunity. Ford again worked his magic, ripping home the free kick from 30 yards out to put the Knights up 2-0. Neumann continued to press forward and found its third goal just three minutes later. After Ford rifled a ball off the crossbar, senior
Andrew Kelly knocked home the rebound to put the hosts up 3-0. The score-line remained the same heading to halftime, with Neumann holding a 14-1 edge in shots.
The Knights continued to dominate the game in the second half but could not capitalize on their numerous opportunities. Despite outshooting the Griffins by a count of 13-5 in the final period of play, Gwynedd Mercy scored the lone goal of the half on a penalty kick in the 56
th minute. That was all that the visitors could muster though, as Neumann took home the 3-1 victory to move to the top of the Atlantic East standings.
Neumann (7-4-2, 3-0-1 Atlantic East) will hit the road for a huge conference matchup on Saturday, October 20
th at Immaculata University. Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
